Volunteer Information and Resources

The Rideau Canal has a series of 8 locks along the race route which must be portaged. The portages vary in length from 30m to 350m, are all well maintained and often have facilities available. Volunteers at lock stations assist the racers with directions, information, and perform timekeeping for the race. Volunteers do not physically assist racers with their craft. Detailed information packages will be supplied to each lock station crew. Some volunteer crews will be asked to enter time keeping information into a web site on your smart phone for real time updates on race progress.

The list of lock stations with portaging maps and driving directions are available below.

To volunteer to help with the race please email info@kingston2ottawa.ca or fill out the form at https://kingston2ottawa.com/volunteers

Volunteers will need to supply their own chairs, and will receive a K2O volunteer TShirt.

Lockstation volunteers are needed at the following locks for the times indicated. Longer shifts will be split between shifts of volunteers if needed.

We are also in need of safety/sweep boats on the lakes and rivers between lock stations. Safety boats covering lakes between lock stations will cover the time between the start time of the previous lock and the finish time of the next lock. e.g. If covering the lakes between Jones Falls and Upper Brewers, racers will be in this area between 10:15 am to 5:00 pm. Volunteers with safety boats can cover all or part of this time. Even if you do not want to be boating, but have property on the lake and commit to being available to respond to phone calls to assist racers in distress this is a huge help.
